Electropolishing stainless steel
Do you need polished parts with burr-free micro and macro stainless steel surfaces? Electropolishing is the solution!
Did you know that we can help you with this and deliver electropolished parts if you need them? Let’s talk!
What is electropolishing?
This is an erosive manufacturing process. Electropolishing removes metal from surfaces. This is done without any mechanical or thermal stress! Burrs in the micro area are removed in order to remove micro roughness, but the shape in the macro area is not changed.
Important!
The parts must be thoroughly cleaned before being treated. All layers of paint, grease and scale must be removed to create the perfect base for electropolishing!
How does electropolishing work?
An electropolishing system consists of a heatable immersion bath, electrical fittings and a cooling unit. A polishing basin filled with a highly concentrated acid mixture is important. The composition of the acid mixture is adapted to the material, so there is no single mixture that can be used for all parts.
The part to be processed is attached to a rack made of bronze, copper or titanium. The rack is then connected to the positive pole of a direct current source and immersed in the electrolyte bath. When the direct current is switched on, the electrolytic liquid acts as a conductor. The effect of the current causes the smallest particles on the surface to dissolve. As a result, the processed part is given a bright, shiny surface, and its corners and edges are finely deburred.
What are the advantages of electropolishing?
- The parts look better
- The parts are deburred
- Stainless steel parts are significantly more resistant to corrosion
- The surfaces are smoothed, resulting in better flow properties
- Complex parts can also be polished evenly, without changing their shape
- Parts are easier to clean and disinfect, because germs have a harder time sticking to the smooth surface
